WHAT ARE THE BEST WAYS TO PREVENT MY HOME BEING BURGLED & INCREASE MY HOME SECURITY?
By Andy J Jones
Most people when asked do not think home security is that important. That is – until they get burgled themselves. So many people think that it won't happen to them and wait until it is too late. This reactive approach can be catastrophic as all your personal possessions, heirlooms and treasured belongings are lost forever. TV's, computers and games consoles are easily replaced but those sentimental items cannot ever be replaced. Why not take a proactive viewpoint and start now to improve your home security to keep the burglars out of your home?
Firstly, treat all exterior doors as possible means of entry for the burglar. Look at the condition of the door and if it's a rotting wooden door them its time to replace it. Deadbolt door locks are a must and should be fitted. Especially pay attention to the doors to the side and rear of your property as these are more concealed and hence more appealing for the burglar to gain entry through. Likewise, look at the condition of your windows and again check for rot.
Have you got good yard lighting? Use motion sensing exterior security lighting to illuminate your yard and light up any dark spots you have. You don't want the burglar hiding in your yard so lighting will deter them from getting close to your house. For your interior lighting, fit timers to give the impression that someone is home. In the evening they will switch on and off at random time intervals so that it looks like someone is switching them on and off.
Outside, be sure to trim overgrown bushes and trees as these make an ideal place for the burglar to hide behind. It is best to plan your landscaping with not only privacy, but security in mind as well.
When you go on vacation be sure to tell a trusted neighbor you are away so they can look out for your property and take care of the mail. Make sure you cancel any papers and regular deliveries.
If you buy a new TV or computer, don't put out the cardboard packaging in the trash outside your house. There is no better way to advertise to a burglar that you have new electronic equipment in your home.
As convenient as it might sound, stop leaving the front door key under a flower pot or under a mat. Burglars look under these too!
Overall, ask yourself this question. If you were locked out of your home, how easy would it to break into your own home? If you can find a way in – then so can the burglar. Act now and protect your home – before it's too late.
